Nsw greens put govt on notice: 'Do not allow your state to subsidise coal industry'
Penny Sharpley and others took note of a recent statement by state secretary for water resources, John Eale, in which he mentioned the concerns of residents in south-east NSW, the Sydney Morning Herald reported.
This statement made by Eale could be seen as a deliberate admission of that the federal government had failed to deliver on its promise of building an Australian Great Barrier Reef.
"There have been a number of proposals on the table in relation to improving access to that coastal landscape and in NSW we are certainly seeing it now.
"As we do so, we need to ensure that this infrastructure can be delivered under the conditions that the federal government has set out. This is a massive problem that requires the federal government to engage directly with the state to really get it right.
"There have been a number of comments [from] government officials and community and other bodies in relation to the Great Barrier Reef and we don't see that we have been able to deliver this project as part of this strategy. We are continuing to explore ways of taking the project forward and to be better able to cope with all the changes and demands that come with the Great Barrier Reef."
Eale had this to say about the failure of the federal government to engage the states and ensure "a quality infrastructure", as well as the "impact of changing environmental conditions": "This failure has resulted in a great deal of criticism about our federal government's failure to engage on environmental challenges, particularly that of the Great Barrier Reef."
The issue of climate change and the national infrastructure is a critical area for the government, as it faces its biggest political test yet over the next year, with the government expected to take up its responsibility to lead the world in cutting carbon emissions by cutting its emissions to its target of 18 per cent below 2005 levels by 2050.
According to the Australian Bureau of Statistics, the federal government is expected to spend $13.2bn of the $100.7bn it committed in this election campaign.
